Broken Mirrors and Reflection
by Kendra Edgell, 2023

Artist Statement

I created this piece in response to topics brought up in ARE6641: Contemporary Issues in Art Education. This piece represents my reflection on my own identity as an artist, art educator, and human. This mixed media artwork is made from found objects such as broken mirrors, old frames, and a mask, as well as cyanotypes made in the last few years. One of these cyanotypes is a life-sized nude self-portrait I made during the COVID-19 Pandemic when I was at home and felt that I could be my true authentic self. When creating this mixed-media piece, I wanted to show how I have since returned to hiding parts of myself in my life both personally and professionally. The mask is made from broken mirror pieces is to represent the metaphorical mask that I often wear in public that mirrors others beliefs, behaviors, and more as a way to self-preserve and get through the day. The colored plastic and frames represent being boxed in my others expectations as well as holding the broken pieces together and covering the natural things in life. Finally there are pieces of plants and prints of plants that are easily seen and breaking through the glass to show that nature and the truth of who we are will eventually break through and be seen.
